We arrived in San Miguel de Allende around 4pm after being on the bus since 10pm the night before. We were loopy from the sleep deprivation and all the color and noise of the drive. Then a taxi brought us all the way from Querétaro, about 40 miles away -- he said he'd charge us 300 pesos, but when he dropped us off and I gave him 350 pesos, he began arguing with me. I was fairly sure he wanted more but my Spanish only consists of speaking the numbers one through 10, not necessarily understanding them, much less anything above 11. He finally threw his arms in the air and drove away. We felt bad and white.

We got a room in the first hotel we saw: it was the Posada Carmina, a former colonial mansion. This was the view from the window. Note the workers on the roof next door. They started early in the morning and kept us awake, along with their colleagues on our roof, but it was OK. The place was dreamy.
