"Well, being the good drug addict I am, I started knitting obsessively. When my friend Alex had a birthday, I started fooling around with felting. When you wash wool it shrinks and mats. So I made one for Alex and people suggested that I sell them. So I do while working on the next Breeders' record."

The best zine ever created, Duplex Planet, is now online. (Maybe it has been online for some time, but it wasn't last time I checked.) If you're not familiar with David Greenberger's conversations with the "elderly and declining" or the comix, art, and music that has grown from them, stop first at the visitor center. An excerpt: "From the start I felt that oral history was unsuitable to my needs. When newcomers hear that I have regular conversations and interviews with elderly people, they assume I collect oral history. What that assumption implies is that when one grows old we become solely a repository of our past. This notion is so entrenched that we seem to willingly grow old, talking only of our past. From the start, my mission has been to offer a range of characters who are already old, so that we can get to know them as they are in the present, without celebrating or mourning who they were before." ::

Have you had your sad cute puppy moment for today?

"This cute little puppy, only 4 weeks old, was left on March 26th in the back parking lot of the [Austin] Humane Society. Left in a carrier with no note, she was cold, scared, hungry, and unwanted." ::

Spellbound is a great documentary that you should see if you get a chance. It's about eight young people and their quest for Scripps-Howard National Spelling Bee glory. The SHNSB site has the stuff for you to stage your own spelling bee at home or study the ways of master spellers. There's a list of all the champs and their winning words and round-by-round results of every competition since 1996. In the Audio Paideia section, you can download files of long-time national finals pronouncer Dr. Alex J. Cameron going over words in categories like Colorific!, The Phantom Tollbooth, and Prefixes Rule!. ::

The Mark Lewis documentary The Natural History of the Chicken airs on PBS tonight. The film features the story of Miracle Mike, the headless chicken, among stories of other headed chickens. Lewis is the man behind Cane Toads: An Unnatural History, the story of Australia's misguided attempt to introduce the giant amphibians as a pest-control measure. Which contains a very memorable scene of a guy driving down a lonely road that's rotten with hopping cane toads, and he's swerving all over the road trying to squash as many as he can. Anyway, back to chickens. Look at these sites!:
Random Chicken: Chicken jokes, recipes, and a random chicken picture server.
Backyard Chickens: All the information you need to raise, keep and appreciate chickens.
The American Egg Board: The Incredible Edible Egg people are also your source for School Foodservice Recipe Contest Winners. ::

Oh hells yeah! The Sifl & Olly lost third season is out on DVD, and can be purchased through the official S&O site. If you're not familiar with the show, let me recommend the many sites on which sock puppet devotees have collected just about every second of every episode in mp3 form: Try The Sifl & Olly Archive (probably the best organized), Sifl-n-Olly.net (warning: it's rotten with popup ads), or Sifl & Olly Sock Zone. This clip's a classic. You may start with it.
Also: Apple interviews Liam Lynch, half of Sifl & Olly's creators. It's as much about pimping Apple products as it is about the history of the show, but worth reading. ::
