Young Paul of Riverside, CA (eerily, right near my adolescent home of Corona) writes in with a cockroach killah proven effective "through extensive study, days spent at the Riverside Public Library, and extensive nights of testing and cross-testing several of our captured 'subjects.'"

"1) Buy some rosemary oil. You know the hippie oils, NOW is an okay brand and cheap too. You'll also need some castille soap, Dr. Bronner out of Escondido, CA works like a charm. Any other liquid soap will work okay. Lastly you'll need some rubbing alcohol. (It isn't 100% neccesary, but helps cut the oil)

2) Get a spray bottle. Any old spray bottle will work. Fill the bottle halfway with water.

3) Mix a healthy amount of oil in the water. Let's say, an ounce. Mix in soap. Cap and shake. Add alcohol, cap and shake.

4) Smell your mixture. It should smell like rosemary, a lot.

5) Test on roaches!

Now, we tested a lot of other oils, and rosemary is the best by far. Later on we actually found some "natural" bug spray in a hippie store with a main ingredient of rosemary! The only trick is getting your mix right, the more rosemary the better. Just put your spray bottle on "stream" and spray away! It won't chem out your couch, and it actually smells nice!"

I meant to revive the Cockroach Diaries a little early this year after a tree roach RAN UP MY PANTS while I was sitting at a cafe, studying for a test. Somehow, I held it together and didn't panic-vomit. OK, so roaches don't make me panic-vomit, but they get me about 90% there.

Thank you Paul. Though I have the feeling that me just thinking about cockroaches will make them appear. I hope your formula works on Texas roaches as well as it works on California roaches.

Glue things to your car, paint your house crazy colors, and see the
Trachtenburg Family Slideshow Players. David Cross makes a compelling argument. (hells yeah Cardhouse!)

The Excitement Machine's extended family has a greyhound-lab-shepherd shaped hole in it. J.R. Cope's dog was killed by a car a few weeks ago. He was a very good, handsome kid; afraid of thunder, hump-buddy of Boutros Boutros (though he cheated, but hey, it was a long-distance relationship). We will miss him terribly, and our sympathies go out to J.R., who gave him a great life after rescuing him from a New York City shelter.

A little permanent memorial for Bo here.

Not to sound like an army commerical, but what would your biography's index list?

June Carter Cash, 1929-2003

June Carter Cash was the last surviving member of the Carter Sisters (and of the Original Carter Family for that matter) and of course, Johnny Cash's wife. She was a prayer warrior, and although I don't agree with her whole "obey thy husband" lifestyle, it made her happy and I respect that.

My favorite June Carter Cash recordings (aside from "If I Were a Carpenter," which just slays me every time) are from 1939, when she was 10 years old -- they're on the Carter Family on Border Radio three-disc series. How about I mourn her death by making illegal mp3s?

Engine 143 (June solo) / Jealous Hearted Me (family)
You Are My Flower (family) / Gathering Flowers From the Hillside (June solo)

On her last album, Press On (which I reviewed here, scroll down), she and husband sang a duet called "Far Side Banks of Jordan." It carried extra weight due to Johnny Cash's ailing health. The lyrics were prescient:

---
(Johnny)
I believe my steps are growing wearier each day
Got another journey on my mind
The lures of this old world have ceased to make me wanna stay
and my one regret is leaving you behind

(June)
But if it proves to be his will that I am first to cross
And somehow I've a feeling it will be
When it comes your time to travel likewise don't feel lost
for I will be the first one that you see
---

I've been dreading this day for a long time, but it seems that they were not.

Even if you've never played Animal Crossing (Nintendo Gamecube), KK Slider's songs are mighty enjoyable. He's a little dog who busks every Saturday night in front of the train station. After his show he gives you a tape of the song you just heard to enjoy at home. My favorites of these mp3s are KK Love Song, KK Western, KK Safari, and KK Dirge ... anything with howling and whistling in it.

bottlevillage.jpg

"Beginning construction in 1956 at age 60, and working until 1981, Tressa "Grandma" Prisbrey transformed her 1/3 acre lot into Bottle Village, an otherworld of shrines, wishing wells, walkways, other random constructions, plus 15 life size structures all made from found objects placed in mortar. The name "Bottle Village" comes from the structures themselves -- made of tens of thousands of bottles unearthed via daily visits to the dump for years, some of them from her husband's own bad habit."

We interrupt this art week (which will be extended to art two weeks I think) to say Happy No Pants Day! It's a local Austin custom but there's no reason it can't be celebrated anywhere and everywhere.

UT's Knighthood of Buh, who is behind No Pants Day, has a political wing whose platform includes: "We will rename the Longhorns to the Tropicana Pure Premiumhorns."

"Learning to Love You More is both a web site and series of non-web presentations comprised of work made by the general public in response to assignments given by artists Miranda July and Harrell Fletcher and various guests ... "

"Now that you are here you will want to accept an assignment, complete it by following the simple but specific instructions, send in the required report (photograph, CD, video, etc), and see evidence of your work posted on-line. Like a recipe, meditation practice, or familiar song, the prescriptive nature of these assignments liberates you from creativity and allows you focus on what you are feeling and experiencing."

There are some very intriguing and accessible assignments. Like: "re-create this snapshot":
