Lots of good stuff lately from Metafilter: Hugh MacLeod's cartoons on the back of business cards; Brad Christensen's very entertaining responses to Nigerian scam spam; Twexus, a database of images that increases in functionality the more you look through it; Distributed Proofreaders, a way to use your proofreading skills for good instead of evil; and exhastive lists of movies featuring jugglers, bagpipes, accordions, librarians, math, socks, hypnosis, smoking, whipping, soup, bare feet, dogs, deuces of clubs, peeing, quicksand, and plumbing.

Help me, fashion conscious young adult! Does anyone have back issues of Jane magazine? From the ol' referrer logs I found this thread, in which someone suggests a recent fashion spread ("100 under 100") may have been inspired by the JC Penney 1980 catalog site (or old Sears/JC catalogs in general). The original message was posted in mid-October, so I guess it would be the October or November issue? Anyway, I'd love to see scans of the pages.

Today is my dirty 30. It's my birthday, have a party, it's my birthday, have a party

Also celebrating today is Maggie Gyllenhaal, Miss Oksana Baiul, Lisa Bonet, Sarah's friend Julie, and Donn from Donn's Depot.

Not celebrating today is Burgess Meredith, who is dead.

I just discovered the very intense Incoming Signals weblog. Check out the 11/11 entry, with a surprising wealth of links about elephants and death: people killing (nay, executing) elephants, elephants killing people back.

Peripherally from the elephant electrocution link, heeeeeeere's theElectricChair.com, which was borne from a short documentary film called Sing Sing Unplugged. The site attempts to answer such questions as "Why an electric chair and not a bed?", and expands its horizons into just about anything electrical and deadly, be it funny or sick and serious.

Yahoo's Picks of the Week recently spotlighted the long-running site NewsRadio and the Comedic Art, dedicated to one of the few sitcoms in television history that really deserved the "comic genius" designation. The essays there (cf. How It Came to Pass That True Greatness Was Not Recognized in Its Own Time, Physical Comedy and the Visual Gag, Morally Expressive Art) elevate this site above your everyday fan forum/episode guide thingy. It seems almost all the cast members have gone downhill since the show ended, but what do you expect. Well, except Stephen Root, whose King of the Hill character Bill Dauterive at least approaches the genius of Jimmy James, and maybe makes up for The Country Bears.

Hopefully the shows (NewsRadio and King of the Hill) will be available on DVD someday.

As the season turns to Autumn, a girl's mind turns to demolition derbys. (Derbies?) Travelers Diagram links to two kinds of xtreme derbys (or "demos," as they're called in the biz): school bus and limousine. There's also the motorcycle demolition derby", but there's not much in that link unless you like exclamation points. A quote!:

"Motorcycle demolition derbies are great. They are not as spectacular as school bus demolition derbies but they are funny!!! This is the type of demolition derby that shows off the drivers personality the most!!!So if you have a great personality this is the demo derby for you!"

Now's the time to try the Mexican version of hot chocolate. Cornstarch makes it thick and delicious.
